Swiss reggae artist of Sri Lankan origin Binghi is introducing himself to Jamaican audiences with the release of his new single, “I Am Blessed,” an uplifting roots-reggae track grounded in gratitude, faith, resilience and purpose.
Binghi’s new single “I Am Blessed” released via Lion Rock Music Group and distributed by Tuff Gong International, arrives on all major streaming platforms today, September 11. The single marks the first official release from Binghi’s forthcoming body of new work and offers listeners an introduction to an artist whose musical journey has stretched across Europe, Asia, Africa and Jamaica.
Born into a story of cultural displacement and later adopted into a European family, Binghi, whose given name is Patrice Cyril Lingam Amrein, grew up in Switzerland with access to extensive musical education. His aptitude for music was recognised from as early as age three, and he later completed formal conservatory training in 2011 before expanding his craft into audio engineering.
That technical training developed alongside a deeper personal search for identity, belonging and cultural connection.
Over the years, Binghi’s journey has taken him across Europe and back to his roots in India and Sri Lanka, where he was born. His travels later extended across Africa, from Senegal in the west to Madagascar in the east, with time also spent in Ghana.
Throughout these experiences, music and sound became an important way of connecting with people, places and cultures.His journey eventually led him to Jamaica, where he spent more than two years immersed in the culture and music that had influenced him from afar.
For Binghi, Jamaica became more than a creative stop. Through time spent in the island’s musical community and encounters with artists and elders connected to reggae’s roots, he developed a deeper appreciation for the genre as a vehicle for memory, spirituality, protest, upliftment and connection.
“I got a lot of inspiration from the people, and so I want to give back to the people,” Binghi said. “Music is something I have loved since I was a child, and ‘I Am Blessed’ comes from that place of gratitude.”
That message is at the heart of “I Am Blessed.”
Built around warm live instrumentation and a conscious, inspirational reggae approach, the song reflects on gratitude not simply as a feeling, but as a way of seeing life. It brings together the different cultural influences that have shaped Binghi while remaining firmly rooted in his respect for Jamaican reggae.
The wider project has drawn on experienced Jamaican musical talent, including renowned saxophonist Dean Fraser and veteran engineer Errol Brown, whose work is closely associated with the Tuff Gong sound.
